Executive Summary
The Client: One of the largest Media and Advertising Agencies operating across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
The Challenge: An inflexible, high-maintenance, and costly on-premises legacy infrastructure that crippled remote work capabilities, created massive licensing overhead, and lacked centralized visibility.
The Solution: Latavi Group designed and executed a comprehensive migration and modernization strategy. We consolidated 40+ legacy SQL Servers into two Azure SQL Managed Instances and replaced a distributed client-server application model with an agile Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) environment.
The Result: 100% remote work enablement, 90%+ reduction in SQL server management overhead, significantly lower licensing costs, enhanced security, and an optimized, scalable infrastructure.
The Problem: An Infrastructure Built for a Bygone Era
Our client, a leader in the fast-paced MENA media landscape, was held back by a rigid, decades-old IT architecture. Their core operations relied on a mission-critical, legacy client-server application supported by a sprawling, fragmented database environment.
Key Pain Points:
- Licensing and Cost Crisis: The agency was managing and licensing over 40 individual SQL Server instances on-premises. This created an unsustainable financial burden in licensing fees and hardware maintenance.
- Remote Work 'Impossible': The client-server architecture required direct installation on laptops and a persistent low-latency connection. Over VPN, this model failed completely, paralyzing remote hybrid teams.
- Massive Maintenance Overhead: Patching, backing up, and monitoring 40+ servers was a nightmare for IT, consuming all their resources.
- The 'Patching Paradox': Fear of breaking complex dependencies delayed critical security updates, leaving the agency vulnerable.
- No Single Source of Truth: Data was siloed across 40+ instances, making proactive management and visibility impossible.
The Solution: A Two-Pronged Azure Modernization Strategy
Latavi Group proposed a modern, cloud-native architecture on Microsoft Azure, focusing on simplification, consolidation, and accessibility.
To untangle the fragmented database environment while maintaining full compatibility, Latavi Group deployed two Azure SQL Managed Instances (SQL MI), successfully consolidating all 40+ on-premises SQL databases into a managed cloud solution.
- SQL MI 1 (OLTP): Dedicated to the core transactional processing.
- SQL MI 2 (OLAP): Optimized for reporting and analytical workloads.
We shifted the application delivery model from a distributed "client-on-laptop" to a centralized, cloud-hosted model. We deployed a robust Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) environment consisting of 30+ multi-session session hosts.
The legacy application was installed into the AVD golden image once. Users now access it remotely via HTML5 browser or the AVD client securely without latency issues, since the compute is co-located with the databases in Azure.
Key Business Benefits Delivered
The shift to AVD liberated 300+ users. The media agency can now support a fully remote or hybrid workforce across the MENA region with business continuity.
By moving to SQL MI, Latavi Group effectively eliminated OS management, patching, and hardware management for 40 servers. Azure handles HA automatically with a 99.99% SLA.
We implemented Azure Monitor SQL Insights and Azure Monitor AVD Insights to provide a single, real-time dashboard of session health, connection latency, and performance.
Consolidating 40+ licenses saved upfront costs, while AVD Autoscale automatically handles severe month-end activity spikes, scaling down during off-peak hours to heavily reduce compute spend.
With Zero Data on Devices, secure NSGs, and centralized golden-image updates, all 300+ users are always running the most securely patched version seamlessly.
Conclusion: Partnering for Future Growth
The MENA media giant is now running on a modern, elastic, and secure foundation. They have shed the technical debt of 40 legacy servers, empowered their workforce to be hybrid, and gained unprecedented visibility into their operations. This transformation, orchestrated by Latavi Group, has repositioned the agency for agile growth in a digital-first industry.
